5 June 1915 L/Cpl John Albert Harp

5 June 1915 L/Cpl John Albert Harp12/1425 L/Cpl John Albert Harp, Auckland Regt, NZEF.

Born near Whangarei, New Zealand in 1880, John was a keen sportsman (yachting, football, shooting, hockey and cycling) during his younger days. Employed as a signwriter and painter at Rotorua, he enlisted in August 1914 and was assigned to the 6th (Hauraki) Company of the Auckland Regiment. He left New Zealand (Wellington) on 16 October 1914, bound for Suez, Egypt where he arrived on 3 December. John landed at Gallipoli in April 1915and he was killed in action on 5 June 1915. John is now commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
