Pionier Gebhard Groner, Kgl Bay 13 Pionier-Bataillon (3 Rez Komp).
A holder of the Iron Cross 2nd Class and silver military merit medal, Gebhard was 22 years of age when he was killed during the mine explosions at Messines Ridge on 7 June 1917. Working underground at the time of the detonations, his body was never recovered and so he still lies in the remains of one of the subterranean galleries under the Flemish countryside.
