Gefr Johann Mühlberger, 9 Komp Bay 16 Inf-Regt ‘Großherzog Ferdinand von Toskana'.
A serving soldier at the outbreak of war, Johann was a tenant farmer in civilian life. From Vogledt, Bavaria, he had seen service during the Battle of the Frontiers before moving to the Somme where he spent most of 1915. A spell at Arras was ended by the beginning of the Somme battle of 1916 which necessitated the return of Johann's regiment to this front. Holding the area behind Montauban, Johann was killed by a shell splinter on 7 July (the fifth day of defence) but, following on from these positions being over-run the following week, his grave was later lost. Johann , therefore, has no known grave. He was 23 years of age.
