An automobile mechanic from Gilead, Miami County, Indiana, Floyd was born on 10 December 1891. He enlisted into the US Navy at Indianapolis on 15 February 1918 and, after training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Chicago and Hampton Roads, Virginia, he was assigned to the USS Kentucky. He was transfered to the USS Richard Buckley (a British-owned trawler engaged in mine-sweeping duties) on which he was killed on 12 July 1919 when the ship struck a mine off Kirkwall, Scotland killing seven and wounding two. Having no grave but the sea, Floyd is now commemorated on the ‘Tablets of the Missing' at Suresnes American Cemetery, France.
