Born at Chamadelle, Gironde on 7 October 1895, Fernand was called to service on 15 December 1914. Initially, he joined his local infantry regiment (the 144th RI), but he was transferred to the 39th upon entering active service. He saw his first actions in the Artois region north of Arras towards the end of 1915, Fernand fought in the Battle of Verdun around Thiaumont and Fleury before being relieved to the (temporarily) quiet Aisne front at the end of June 1916. He was killed in action on the heights above Vendresse (Chemin des Dames) on 15 July 1916 and, although his grave is lost, he is now buried in an ‘inconnu' grave in Soupir Nr 2 French Cemetery.
