937 Cpl Walter Herbert Courtman, 1st Australian Light Horse.
Born on Jersey in 1889. Walter was a postman in Katoomba, New South Wales at the time of his enlistment (he had emigrated to Australia in 1912). Enlisting on 4 January 1915, Walter embarked for Egypt on board the HMT Bakara on 22 May 1915 and he saw service shortly afterwards at Gallipoli before returning to Egypt. Walter was killed in action during the Battle of Romani, Sinai, on 3 August 1916 and he is now commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial, Israel.
