Born at Gt Orton (Carlisle) on 18 April 1892, Richard was educated at Rossall School (where he was a member of the OTC). Initially planning to take the Holy Orders, the outbreak of war compelled him to enlist and he was gazetted a second lieutenant in the Border Regiment on 26 August 1914, subsequently promoted to lieutenant on 31 December. Richard served at Gallipoli from 1 July 1915 where he was killed in action on 9 August whilst assaulting Turkish positions near Chocolate Hill.
