Home People Remember: on this Day 19 August 1916 Ers Res Josef Felder

19 August 1916 Ers Res Josef Felder

19 August 1916 Ers Res Josef FelderErs Res Josef Felder, Inf-Regt Nr 126 ‘Großherzog Friedrich von Baden' (8 Württembergisches).

From Edenhaus, Wurttemberg, 28 year old Josef was a recalled reservist in August 1914. He served at the front from late Autumn, 1914, with duty on the Lille front and at the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915. He transferred down to Verdun in time for the German offensive of February 1916 and fought there - in the periphery actions on the Woevre front. In March 1916, Josef was in the thick of the action in the Douaumont sector, with his division suffering enormous losses in Caillette Wood. On 18 August 1916, he was once again engaged in desperate fighting in the area of Vaux, his regiment suffering some 70% losses over the next few days. Josef was one of these hundreds of casualties, being killed in action near Vaux on 19 August. It is unsurprising therefore, considering the nature of the fighting in this sector, that he has no known grave.
