A factory worker from Dornbirn, Austria, Johann was born in the town on 31 January 1886. A re-called reservist in July 1914, he served for much of the war in Italy where he was taken prisoner in the latter stages of the war. Taken ill whilst in captivity soon after the end of the war, Johann died whilst still in an Italian hospital on 2 September 1919. His grave location is unknown.
