Sdt Jean Valfort, 298e Regiment d'Infanterie.
Born at Fourneaux, Loire on 23 July 1883, Jean completed his compulsory military service with the 159e Regiment d'Infanterie Alpine in October 1906. As a reservist, he was recalled on 2 August 1914 and joined the 298e Regiment at Roanne. Serving almost immediately in Lorraine, Jean also saw service in the Somme and Oise areas. He was killed in action at Fontenoy Fosse Martin during the Battle of the Marne on 6 September 1914. Jean is now buried in the French military cemetery of Etrepilly.
