Pvt George Earl van Deventer, Co C, 339th Infantry, US Army.
Born at Bloomington, Indiana on 17 July 1894, George was a farmer prior to enlistment. He enlisted into the Aviation Service on 18 December 1917 at Rupert, Idaho but, after training at Kelly Field, Brooks Field and Ellington Field, he was sent to Camp McClellan where he was transferred to the infantry. On 21 July 1918, George embarked for overseas service and he was shipped to Russia on 25 August 1918. He died of pneumonia at Archangel, Russia on 11 September 1918 and was buried in the Allied Cemetery there. His grave was, however, later lost and he is now commemorated on the ‘Tablets of the Missing' at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France.
