1903 Sgt Etienne Seignobos, 298 RI.
From Charlieu, Loire, Etienne was born on 19 January 1881. A recalled reservist in August 1914 (after serving his compulsory service in the 149 RI, he was recalled to the 298th), he was promoted to sergeant within days of his recall. He then saw action in Alsace before moving on to see service on the Somme, the Oise and the Battle of the Marne. Etienne was killed in action during the defence of Vingre (Aisne) on 21 September 1914 – one of over 600 casualties within his regiment during 20/21 September – and he has no known grave.
