Cpl Bert L Rice, Co I, 162nd Infantry Regt, US Army.
A farmer from Clay County, Indiana, Bert was born on 24 August 1897. He enlisted into Co H, 1st Indiana Infantry, National Guard (151st Infantry) at Terre Haute, Indiana on 28 July 1917 and he was trained at Fort Benjamin Harrison and Camp Shelby. After embarking for overseas service on 11 July 1918, Bert was transferred to the 162nd Infantry of the 41st Division with which he was killed in action on 8 November 1918. Initially buried in Argonne American Cemetery No 1232 at Romagne, France (Section 94, Plot 2, grave 81), Bert's body was repatriated to the USA post-war.
