Cpl James Otto Fields DSC, Co D, 130th Infantry Regiment, US Army.
From Loogootee, Martin County, Indiana, James was born on 23 July 1895 and he was a farmer in civilian life. He joined the army on 2 March 1918 and was trained at Camp Dodge and Fort Bliss before being sent to the 130th Infantry in France on 28 May 1918. James was severely wounded during an attack near Fresnes-en-Woevre on 10 November 1918 (the action for which he was to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for ‘extraordinary heroism'), and subsequently he died of his wounds on 12 November 1918. He was buried in the American Cemetery at St Mihiel but his body was repatriated to the USA post-war.
