16 November 1918 Pte Arthur Edmondson

Born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1891, Arthur was living in Cowling, Yorkshire at the time of his enlistment. Enlisting in Brierfield on 30 May 1915, he was sent to France on active service in October of that year, serving on the Western Front throughout. Arthur was severely gassed on 9 April 1918, and he was sent to various military hospitals in the UK for treatment. Whilst at the Military Hospital at Alnwick, Northumberland, Arthur contracted influenza in November 1918 which deteriorated into septic pneumonia. He died from his illness on 16 November 1918. Arthur's body was returned to Cowling where, following a funeral conducted with full military honours including a firing party sent from Bradford, he was buried in the churchyard of the parish church of Holy Trinity.
