Pvt John W Black, American Red Cross.
Born at Rochester, USA, on 16 June 1894, John was a civil engineer in civilian life. He attempted to enlist in mid-1918, but he was rejected for service due to physical disability and, therefore, he volunteered for YMCA duty, but was rejected once again. He finally managed to enlist as a private in the American Red Cross at Chicago on 21 October 1918 and was sent to Camp Scott as an ambulance driver. Here, however, John contracted influenza and he was sent home on sick leave where he died on 25 November. He is buried in Rochester, Indiana.
