From Val Sugana, Italy, Johann was born of Austro/Italian parentage on 11 June 1884 and was a railway worker in civilian life. Enlisting into the Austro-Hungarian forces, he spent most of his war fighting against his half-countrymen. He suffered debilitating wounds towards the end of the war which lingered on into the post-war period until he died of his injuries at Etappe on 29 December 1922.
