9 January 1917 Pte Philip Gordon Holmes

9 January 1917 Pte Philip Gordon Holmes524 Pte Philip Gordon Holmes, 1st (ANZAC) Bn, Camel Brigade.

From Grassington, Yorkshire, Philip was a stonemason by trade. He emigrated to Australia in 1905, where he later enlisted into the 32nd Bn AIF in June 1915 and embarked for Egypt at Adelaide on 18 November 1915. After transferring to the Camel Brigade whilst in Egypt, Philip saw service in the Sudan for almost a year before moving on and seeing his first action against the Turks at El Arish on 13 December 1916. On 9 January 1917, Philip was killed in action at Rafa and he is commemorated on the Kantara Memorial.
