A farm labourer from Burns City, Indiana, Clarence was born on 4 January 1897. After working on a farm in Iowa, he enlisted into the US Navy at Omaha, Nebraska on 13 December 1917. Whilst training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Chicago, Illinois, Clarence contracted pneumonia and died on 22 January 1918. He is buried in his home town of Burns City.
