Born on 18 July 1897, Alfred was a painter in Dornbirn, Austria before enlistment. Enlisting in 1916, most of Alfred's war was fought in Italy where he was taken prisoner in September/October 1918. Alfred died of disease in a PoW holding camp at Vicenza, Italy on 23 January 1919 and was buried locally.
