Born near Pontefract in 1897, Benjamin enlisted into the Royal Navy as a 15 year old in 1913. Involved in several engagements during the war, he was killed in action on board HMS Paragon whilst, alongside HMS Llewellyn, she engaged with eight German torpedo boats in the Straits of Dover.

Paragon was sunk by a torpedo and Benjamin was one of the 74 crew who died that day. Having 'no grave but the sea', Benjamin is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

17 March 1917 killed in action.
