Born in Preston, Lancashire in 1892, John had been living in Earby, Yorkshire since 1912, where he was employed as a weaver. Already serving as a territorial (6th West Riding Regt) at the outbreak of war, he deserted whilst still in the UK in early 1915, but enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery whilst away from his regiment!
After rejoining his regiment, he was transferred to the Seaforths and served overseas as from January 1916.
John was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 20 April 1916 and is now commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.
