First published in 1999, this book is an invaluable guide to the privately-erected memorials in France and Flanders.
After the Great War, many relatives went in search of their family members who were killed on the Western Front. Some arranged for memorials to be erected on the place that their loved ones were buried in the field, away from the more "typical" Imperial (now Commonwealth) War Graves Commission cemetery.
This excellent guide documents the history of the commemorated soldier or airman, the action in which he fell, and the memorial itself. It is also a record of and a testimony to the work that has been undertaken by the WFA and its Memorials Officers, and many others, to ensure these unique artefacts are preserved in some way.
A number of extracts from the book appear on this website. However, the book is an invaluable guide for the battlefield tourer and researcher, and will provide some interesting excursions to some less well-visited actions of the BEF.
Cost is £5, and all proceeds from which go to the WFA Battlefield Memorials Project Fund. PandP £1.50*.
