Correlli Barnett as one of the writers of the television documentary ‘The Great War’ was the obvious choice as the writer for the companion book. This was the groundbreaking series that set the standard for future documentaries on modern warfare. Following the recent re-run of this acclaimed series on BBC2 Correlli Barnett has rewritten the companion book to assist the viewer in understanding and interpreting this momentous series.

The book covers the catastrophe that engulfed the whole of European continent and eventually vast expanses of the globe. Barnett guides the reader through the complexities of this new form of Industrial warfare with consummate ease. He gives the reader concise and pertinent analysis of the many treaties and alliances that helped to create the time bomb that exploded into the Great War in August 1914. He then leads the reader through the many political and military complexities of the war.

The Great War has more myth and legend surrounding it than probably any other

military conflict. Many historians in the late 50’s and early 60’s help to perpetuate the myths of ‘Chateau Generals’ and ‘Senseless slaughter in the Trenches’. Barnett along with the late John Terraine was instrumental in helping to replace the myths and legends with the true facts of this conflict. This book is as pertinent today as it was when it was first published.

In wholeheartedly recommending this book to the many exponents of Great War studies I believe they should give it pride of place in their library. It is very easy to build ones future knowledge of the Great War on rocky foundations. By paying this book its due respects and valuing its sound judgements on the complex issues surrounding the Great War those new to the subject can build on the very firmest foundations. Those who have a more intermit knowledge can use this book as a sound reference point to reaffirm their knowledge of basic principles, strategies and concepts surrounding this fascinating period of history. This book should not be viewed just as a companion to the television series; it stands on its own merits.
