This is a delightful little book, extremely well produced and presented. The book contains 10 articles written by “Tubby” Clayton and taken from previously published works.
Each chapter is self contained, and each gives and insight into the life and work of Clayton and his work at Toc H. There are plentiful excellent illustrations of the old house both then and now and facsimiles of Claytons writing.
The humour and Christian spirit of “Tubby” and the Toc H movement shines through the book, with many amusing stories but also many poignant human episodes and individuals stand out. The dilemma of whether to play billiards on a Sunday, the college lecturer turned mule driver, the equality of rank within the house are all described here.
One chapter is devoted to the reason the house was founded, in memory of Gilbert Talbot, and another to the upstairs chapel which to many men throughout the war offered peace and comfort, many men being confirmed here.
The final chapter is devoted to the Reverend P T B “Tubby” Clayton himself, with the magnificent quote from Tubby “I was cut out to be a genius- unfortunately somebody forgot to put the pieces together”.
This is fine little book and a very good introduction to those who wish to learn more about Toc H and its founder
