Description

This talk by Peter Hodgkinson addresses the issue of how the WW1 soldier dealt with the omnipresence of death. It analyses the mechanisms used to cope with death, and addresses how soldiers grieved for fallen friends, against the background of whether the nature of emotional expression and friendship was different in the Edwardian era to modern conceptions. Peter is a Clinical Psychologist much of whose 33 year career has been taken up with dealing with bereavement, particularly after sudden, violent death. He has an MA in First World War Studies, and is a member of the Department of War Studies at Birmingham University, where he is studying Infantry Battalion command.
